When we were in Charlottetown recently with Jack and Liam we went to see the movie “Yesterday”. If you aren’t familiar with the story, a struggling (Indian) singer in England gets knocked unconscious and when he wakes up find himself in a parallel universe where there is no Coca Cola, no “cigarettes”, and no Beatles.
Just about everything else is the same, but the Beatles thing is big.
Our struggling singer (Jack, played by Himesh Patel) uses his knowledge of classic Beatles songs to become a major recording artist. Until, that is, his conscience gets the better of him and he admits to not actually writing all those songs.
Along the way Jack hooks up with Ed Sheeran’s manager, and at one point in a recording session of the song “Hey Jude”, Sheeran makes the ridiculous suggestion that the song would be better if the name was changed to “Hey Dude”!
For us this turned out to be one of the more hilarious and memorable incidents in the film. In fact we spent much of the rest of the week breaking into “Hey Dude” pretty regularly.
More importantly, this little incident inspired me to complete a practice track for “Hey Jude” in a few different keys (not the original, much to Liam’s chagrin) which you can find in our “Private Collection”. I’ve included a sample below.
